Heritage Open Days 2026 and North Entrance Tours

Western Heights Preservation Society were proud to once again take part in the annual Heritage Open Days – England’s largest community-led festival of history and culture, featuring thousands of events across every region of England giving the public free access to sites of historic and cultural interest.

On Sunday 13th September, WHPS volunteer Andy Rayner hosted walking tours of some of the Western Heights batteries.

On the weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September, we hosted tours of our North Entrance tunnels and also opened up the Grand Shaft to visitors.

Thanks to all our volunteers and marshalls who give their time, knowledge and enthusiasm to make these events possible. We welcomed over 440 visitors and received some wonderful feedback from members of the public.

Enormous thanks to Paul Wells for organising the Dover Heritage Open Days events, to DDC Western Heights Liaison Officer Sarah Horan, to all our dedicated WHPS volunteers and to David, Jay and Mark for managing our Grand Shaft site.

Keep an eye on events for next year’s HOD tours and we would love to see you at our next WHPS volunteering day on Sunday 18th October. See our Calendar for details.
