Volunteer Marshalling

WHPS need volunteer helpers to put on a number of events throughout the year including:

  • Twice yearly opening of the Drop Redoubt
  • An annual opening of North Entrance as part of the Heritage Open weekends
  • Evening opening of the Drop Redoubt as part of the Up on the Downs weekend
  • Monthly Grand Shaft staircase openings

Each event comes with significant H&S risks due to the nature of the site and ultimately we want our visitors to enjoy their day and be safe. Each open weekend takes on average between five and six hundred hours of volunteer time to run properly so we really need volunteer marshals to supervise and engage with our visitors, set up and dismantle the event.

If you would like to come along and help us you are more than welcome. We provide a briefing pack, hi viz vests, free tea & coffee, free lunch and only ask that you interact with our visitors and help them to enjoy their visit. You don’t need to be an expert and we will provide full support and instruction on the day(s). You don’t need to be a regular, you don’t have to commit to a whole day or event, we can accommodate a few hours, a morning, a day or a whole weekend, it’s up to you!

Duties would include providing visitors with advice about where to visit, ensuring that visitors respect the safety barriers and ‘do not climb’ signs, summoning first aid in the event of injuries and assisting in set up for re-enactor displays. You may be asked to ‘back up’ a tour of the North Entrance or Drop Redoubt on occasions.

So if you would like a fun day out, free entrance to the fort and other areas of the Western Heights, free lunch and an opportunity to see and support people really enjoying a unique site in Dover then give us a shout.

Details of events are on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/westernheights or you can contact us through the links on this site or message us on our Facebook page
