For our final volunteer workday of 2025 on 16th November, we went to the Drop Battery site to give it a tidy up and to enhance accessibility for everyone using it over the winter. This also serves to discourage anti-social behaviour and littering.
A large amount of vegetation was cleared and burned, and all the surrounding footpaths and stairways were tidied and widened by cutting back encroaching plants. Predominantly overgrowth of buddleia and bramble was cleared and this is the correct time of year to do this work as it has minimal impact on wildlife at the site.
Enormous thanks to all volunteers who took part – we couldn’t do this valuable work without your help! It is the tenacity and enthusiasm of the volunteers that keeps this part of the Western Heights accessible, well-managed and cared for so that we can continue to tell stories of the past and keep those stories alive.
Thanks to all who support us in other ways too over the year such as by donation or by sharing news of the work we do and of course by attending our events and tours.
Big thanks also to our regular volunteers at the Grand Shaft staircase which saw a record number of visitors for the time of year.
We wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year and hope you will continue to visit and enjoy the Western Heights throughout the winter. Keep an eye on our Calendar of Events page which will be updated shortly with our list of upcoming dates for 2026!
Thanks from all of us at WHPS! 🙂
