For our first workday of 2026 we will be continuing our work at St Martin’s Battery on Sunday 18th January.
Historically, for a long time this amazing structure had been neglected and has been the focal point for antisocial behaviour and criminal damage but by clearing it and with involvement of Kent Police, Port of Dover Police, Dover District Council and volunteers it has become better protected and used. The recent installation of an accessible footpath by Dover District Council has been a great success.
As a fun aside, we recently came by this 1987 annual report by Dover District Council – see pictures below – which mentions works being done at St Martin’s Battery and shows pictures of the fort and guides at the time!
The nature of the work on this workday will mostly be vegetation clearance to maintain the preservation of historic structures and keep the area clean and tidy.
Please meet us at St Martin’s Battery car park at 10:30 for a safety briefing and assignment of tasks. As ever all PPE and tools will be provided, but please ensure you wear appropriate safe footwear and dress warm for the cold outdoor weather.
